Michigan League for Public Policy

WEBSITE DESIGN

The Michigan League for Public Policy (MLPP) is a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to economic opportunity for all. It is the only state-level organization that addresses poverty in a comprehensive way and analyzes the impact of state and federal budgets and policies on residents with low incomes. All of the League’s work is done through a racial equity lens.

During my time as a designer at Change Media Group, I worked with the MLPP from 2017 to 2018 to design a new and improved look for their website. There was a large amount of content to include so I spent a lot of time in the initial planning stages working out how best to lay out the site. We re-worked the site organization, emphasizing the most important parts, while keeping it clean and easy to navigate (check out the site map above!).

In addition to being lead designer for the project, I was also the project manager. I managed client communications, created wireframes, and collaborated with our developer to make the site come to life on Wordpress, working within the limitations of the theme. I also freshened up the design with bold, modern type, more use of color, custom iconography, and authentic photography. In hindsight, this was one of my first large website designs and I think I could have done a better job with making a more engaging design. Although ADA compliancy was top of mind and we did add alt-text to all images, I failed in making sure all text, especially buttons were, high enough contrast. This project was a learning experience for me.
